Unlike the KTM 390 Adventure, which leans more towards long-distance touring and light off-road use, the KTM 390 Enduro R is purpose-built for intense off-road challenges. It comes equipped with a 43 mm WP Apex open cartridge front fork offering 200 mm of travel, paired with a rear WP Apex monoshock that delivers 205 mm of travel. Both suspension units are fully adjustable for rebound and compression, enabling riders to tailor the bike’s behavior to different terrains. Additionally, it features spoke wheels—21-inch at the front and 18-inch at the rear—wrapped in aggressive dual-sport knobby tires to enhance off-road traction and performance.
2. Frame and Geometry
KTM has introduced a brand-new two-piece steel trellis frame for the 390 Enduro R, offering a steeper steering head angle for quicker handling. Reinforced triple clamps with 25 mm risers, along with an off-road-specific subframe, contribute to a more responsive ride. The updated frame also allows better clearance around the radiator and provides improved ground clearance. Strategically positioned footpegs optimize rider control when standing, while the gravity die-cast swingarm complements the bike’s off-road-oriented chassis geometry, ensuring stability and nimbleness across rugged terrain and during jumps.
3. Engine and Maintenance
Powering the 390 Enduro R is the newly introduced 399cc LC4c single-cylinder engine, first seen in the 2024 KTM Duke lineup. The engine is lighter and more compact, featuring a revised cylinder head, new valve covers, and a redesigned angled fuel injector for cleaner combustion and improved efficiency. It boasts an updated maintenance schedule, with the first service due at 1,000 km and subsequent intervals set at 7,500 km. A lighter exhaust system—2 kg less than before—with a dual-catalyst setup ensures compliance with emission standards while delivering crisper throttle response and smoother power output.
4. Tech and Safety Features
A 4.2-inch TFT display with bonded glass, anti-glare coating, and high-contrast visuals ensures clear readability even under direct sunlight. Practical additions like a USB-C charging port, Bluetooth functionality, and newly designed switchgear with a joystick make interacting with the bike’s tech easy. The 390 Enduro R includes selectable riding modes, including an OFF-ROAD MODE that permits more rear-wheel slip and allows riders to disable Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) for maximum off-road freedom. Switchable ABS further enhances control by allowing adjustments to suit different terrains.
5. Design Elements
The 390 Enduro R sports a stripped-down, functional design built with off-road durability in mind. A slim 9-litre metal fuel tank, minimal fairings, and rugged in-mold graphics that resist scratches underscore its purpose-built nature. The low-profile tank enhances rider mobility and safeguards internal components. A bolt-on subframe supports a single-piece seat tailored for off-road comfort. Full LED lighting ensures excellent visibility in all environments, while the bike’s compact size makes it adept at navigating both tight off-road trails and busy urban streets.
